CHAPTER ELEVEN
âHey ladies, great to see you,â Jason said smoothly.
Annie was beaming from ear to ear when she saw him. Her dream date with a hunky football player was about to start. Annie had come over to the Jonesesâ house after school so we could get ready for our evening out together. She had spent a good hour applying makeup, putting her hair in an up-do that looked effortless, and adjusting her tight jeans and low-cut blouse so they hugged her body perfectly. It had paid offâshe looked absolutely stunning.
We were driving along in Jasonâs red Ford Focus when I asked, âWhere are Kyle, Brooke, and Colt?â
My understanding was that Kyle and Jason would pick us up from the Jonesesâ house. Brooke and Colt should have been there as well, while the rest of the group would meet us at our destination, which we assumed was a pool, since Jason had told Annie that we should bring our swimsuits and towels.
âKyle had some stuff to do and is meeting us there. Brooke and Colt asked me to tell you that they were sorry but they couldnât make it. They had some last-minute schoolwork to do,â Jason answered quickly.
Who would pick schoolwork over a night at the pool? That didnât sound like Brooke and Colt at all. I was disappointed they wouldnât be there, but more than, that I felt quite unsettled, like something wasnât right. I couldnât place it, but I had a feeling in my gut that I tried to ignore.
âAnd the others are meeting us there?â I asked.
âNo, itâs just us,â Jason said, and turned up the radio. I was sure it was to tune me out. Annie turned around and glared at me, letting me know that I should stop my inquisition. It dawned on me that this group thing had turned into a double date. That was so not what I had signed up for! This wasnât how I had envisioned this evening, but if I was going to live more in the present and not overthink everything, I had to start sometime. Why not tonight? Just go with the flow, I tried to convince myself.
âWhere are we going?â I asked, ignoring Annie and the blaring radio.
âI take it youâre not one for surprises,â Jason said.
âNo, not really. So?â
âIf you must know, weâre going to the Norris Hot Springs. A great place to just chill and have some fun. You like having fun, donât you?â He looked at me through the rearview mirror. I just stared back.
âTonight a band is playing live. Iâm sure you will enjoy yourselves. Kyle and I will make sure of it.â Ugh! Sleazy! Jason was making it really hard to enjoy the moment. Plus, I was stuck on a date I hadnât signed up for. Just have some fun and keep an open mind, I told myself. It is just an evening of hanging out! But I wasnât feeling it.
We were driving along a country road in the middle of nowhere. It was dark and I could barely make out anything.
